Designer of the week is Italian designer and business woman Miuccia Bianchi. Also known as Miuccia Prada. Prada attended Liceo Classico Berchet high school in Milan and graduated with a PhD in political science at the University of Milan. Youngest granddaughter of Mario Prada. Prada took over the family owned luxury goods manufacturer in 1978. With her background in political science, many assumed that she had no idea she would soon be taking over the company. Her grandfather established the company in 1913 so maybe he wanted to retire and Miuccia was the only one that would jump on board. Whatever the reason, Miuccia has made heads turn since taking over the company. Miuccia has turned her family's modest leather goods house into one of the fashion's ready to wear powerhouses.
By 1988, she designed and introduced her first women's ready-to-wear collection. Soon after she launched her first menswear line. Wanting more, she became the co-chief executive and co-creative director of Prada and creative director of Miu Miu. Miu Miu was introduced in 1993 as a less expensive womenswear line inspired by her personal wardrobe. Miu Miu is actually her nickname so this was a little more personal to her. She's been named best dressed by Forbes for women over 50. The magazine listed her as the 75th most powerful woman in the world in 2014.
Miuccia has been unstoppable since being involved in the women's rights movement during the seventies in Milan as well as a member of the Italian Communist Party. While under Miuccia, the company has expanded into leather goods, shoes, fragrance, and apparel for both men and women. Since COVID, Raf Simons, Christian Dior and Calvin Klein will be working alongside Miuccia with equal responsibilities for creative decision making.
