Inspirational Fashion: Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana

This week is going to be a little different. This week there is two great designers and they are Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana. The reason for the two designers is because they are a team and have created the most well known luxury brand Dolce & Gabbana.

Domenico Dolce

This talented designers dream was to work for Giorgio Armani. He went to school for fashion and decided to drop out when he felt he learned everything that the school had to teach. The day he decided to show Armani he design sketches, he was presented with a white carpet leading to the front desk. Instead of walking on the white carpet, he slides along the wall which probably made the receptionists day with a smile and a chuckle. To this day, he has no idea is Armani saw his designs but ended up getting a job as an assistant for Giorgio Correggiari. When going to a club, this was when he met which would be his long time friend and partner Stefano Gabbana. How Dolce & Gabbana was born was when they both parted from Correggiari and got a loft of their own. They would sign different invoices and then came up with the idea to write Dolce & Gabbana at the top of one invoice. Thus the brand name was born.

Stefano Gabbana

Gabbana went to school for graphic design. He was interested in working for Correggiari. When he went to a club, he met Domenico Dolce who gave him advice on how to approach Correggiari for a job. Correggiari hired him for sportwear in which Dolce and Gabana started to work together. This started a spark being them. However, after being hired, He had 18 months of mandatory military service in which he returned in 1982. Once he came back, that is when they both parted from Correggiari.

Career

Their first womens collection was featured in Milan in 1985. this collection was mostly homemade and had complicated fastenings. Dolce used a bed sheet from home as a stage curtain and asked his friends to help him by being his models. Their first collection sales wasn't what Dolce and Gabbana was hoping for. Their sales was very low. With them not having that much money, the family chipped in to help them pay for fabric for their second collection. Soon after the third colletion, their fourth collection made the most impact. Their signature designs are gangster pinstripes, sexy black suits and corset dresses. They are known for wanting to make women look fantastic and sexy. Their style is sweet, sharp and cool. They wanted to create clothes that would be flattering, fashion forward, and trendy. As this company continues to grow, they have received many awards and is now known as the world's most successful ready-to-wear companies and the most talked about.
