Designer of the week is Thomas Jacobs. What many would actually know him as Tommy Hilfiger. He attended The High School of Art & Design and GST BOCES Bush Campus. Hilfiger would go to New York to buy his jeans and bell-bottoms that were customized and resold at Brown's. Not many designers will say that they was able to open their own store with $150 dollars but Hilfiger did. His store was called People's Place which actually stood up for a long time while a lot of stores closed down or moved. However, with his shop being in the basement, it got completely flooded by Hurricane Agnes in June 1972. Eventually, after seven years, they went bankrupt. Turning to designing clothing for upstate New York, Hilfiger moved to New York with his wife where he was offered to assist Calvin Klein and Perry Ellis. However, he turned them down which if I was in that position, I would not of turned them down. Although, this worked out in the long run. Even though he was poor, Tommy Hilfiger Corporation was born in 1985. In 1992, the brand went public with his signature menswear. Since then, his company and brand has grown at a rapid pace. The brand did end up having a large decline in sales in which forced Hilfiger to sell his company. The ironic part to this is that Calvin Klein (Phillios-Van-Heusen) ended up buying the company. Now Hilfiger is a fashion consultant on American Idol. Check him out!
