Designer of the week is Alexandre Plokhov. Plokhov served with the Russian Strategic Missile Troops till the mid 90's when he decided to make a career change. Thus, leading him to move to the United States for a career in fashion. First worked as a custom tailor and later as a pattern maker for Marc Jacobs. Followed by creating designs for Cloak and Versace labels before starting his own brand in 2011. Plokhov has been known for his razor sharp tailoring, detail work and use for luxurious fabric. His line features a lot of black, grey, neutrals and white with minimal drapery. This is something that Plokhov has always been drawn to. Mystery, sexy, edgy, chic while being dramatic paired with amazing tailoring.
Catching the eye of the industry, his brand has always been at the top of the list on most talked about in the fashion world. By 2014, Plokhov was named as the creative director for Helmut Lang. As sad as it is to see a good brand go down, by 2015, Plokhov had to shut down his label. Many saw this coming when he joined with Helmut Lang. However, he didn't stay long with Helmut Lang. He moved on to debuting his new project called Nomenklatura Studio as creative director to eventually head of design. Nomenklatura was actually an inside joke name. In Soviet slang, the word refers to people of the ruling elite. Which Plokhov is far from that.
The pieces that are featured under this brand express a lot of imagination. Screen prints that are inspired by the adventures as well as mixes of militaristic elements with tees and sweats. Much harder but well executed. What’s amazing about these pieces is that most of Plokhovs work is inspired by his surroundings. His travels like I previous stated, but films, music and art. He has also created a shoe line and they are definitely worth checking out.
