Designer of the week is the fashionable icon Betsey Johnson. She is well known for doing cartwheels at the end of her fashion shows and creating over the top whimsical designs. Her fashion career started after she interned at Mademoiselle magazine. She entered the Mademoiselle Guest Editor Contest and won it. Being part of the youthquake fashion movement, The Velvet Underground, Andy Warhol's underground scene, Lou Reed and Edie Sedgwick, Johnson opened a boutuque called Betsey Bunky Nini on the upper east side of New York. Johnson took over the fashion label "Alley Cat" in the 1970's and debuted her first collection for Alley Cat.
When she entered the contest for a second time, her pieces didn't sell all that well. She opened a retail store in the SoHo area of New York City and was introduced into the Fashion Walk of Fame in 2002. Over the years and dressing the big leagues, her line has expanded to included handbags, scarves, hats, and accessories. Her store has expanded to more than 65 stores worldwide. Bankruptcy did hurt Johnson but she didn't let that stop her from creating, refreshing and being herself. She continues to receive awards and expand her company. She is definitely one of a kind and very easy to get a long with. You will never be bored around Betsey Johnson!
It is amazing to see how the fashion shows and collections were back then. To also the outfits and styles that the everyday person wore!
