Designer of the week is Derek Lam. Born in California, Lam would sit with the seamstresses from the garment factory that his grandparents ran and watched them work. Lam's parents would import clothes from Asia so Lam got to see a lot of clothes come and go. Inspired to learn more, he joined and graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1990. Hitting the ground running, Lam applied and worked for Michael Kors for four years. Moved to Hong Kong, just to move back to New York to continue working under Michael Kors as his vice President of Design for his Kors line. He also worked for Tod's as Creative Director. It wasn't till 2003, when he got the chance to launch his own label. Lam is best known for his clean crisp silhouettes and using feminine fabrics. Wide leg trousers, plunging neckline dresses, and wool or dainty cashmere pea coats are part of Lams signature pieces.
