Designer of the week is Michelle Smith. Knew at a young age, she would be a designer. Fashion spoke to her in different ways that no one could understand and this is definitely something the industry could see when she launched her own contemporary brand called Milly in 2001. Going to Paris and working for Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior really helped improve her skills that has caught the eye of many celebrities as well as the first lady, Michelle Obama. Milly quickly became a power house. After years of designing, she decided to stop when the company started to struggle due to the changing retail economy. After the last bid, she slipped out of the office in tears.
This was a piece a her but she used this time to reflect on what to do next. She became inspired to start a brand new collection. This birthed the namesake label Michelle Smith. This is on her own terms and with a new purpose which she feels very strongly with. Quality over quantity. Her collections are made and posted to pre-order on her website. Her designs are not what's on trend but what she can give us to feel comfortable and sexy at the same time. Since COVID, she understands that people aren't shopping to shop. So her plan is to only make what's being ordered. In the end, this drastically cuts down on the environmental pollution and waste. She doesn't follow any wholesale retail calendar schedules. She makes what's inspires her and throws in a few hidden gems in each collection. With Michelle, you have a designer that truly lives her brand.
