Designer of the week is Peter Som. Born in California where he was raised by architectural parents who influenced him to start sketching at a young age. He would draw women and their clothes which didn't surprise his parents. When he wasn't drawing or reading Vogue, he would be in the kitchen helping his mom cook which also sparked his love for cooking. Studied at Connecticut College where he received a degree in Art History by 1993. Peter continues his studies at the Parsons School of Design where he apprenticed with Michael Kors and Calvin Klein. Peter Som pursued his career as a fashion designer by working under Bill Blass as assistant designer in 1998 to 2007. Peter soon left the company in 2008 to concentrate on his namesake label.
By 2009, he became creative consultant for Tommy Hillfiger. The label Peter Som was finally born in 2001 but Peter still worked with Tommy Hillfiger up till 2012. His talent was recognized through competitions. He won and was presented with the Parsons Gold Thimble Award by Isaac Mizrahi. One of his most recognized collections was his Spring 2007 collection which Vogue's Anna Wintour described the collection to be career changing. Peter has made an huge impact among young celebrities. You can find his collections being sold at top retailers worldwide as well as a ongoing collection exclusively for Rent the Runway. His collections featured his signature use of color and pattern with streamlined feminine silhouettes in the fashion arena.
The brand is best known for it's effortless sophistication in which it extended to all lifestyle spaces. Through the years, Peter has become an award winning fashion designer and culinary creator as well as lifestyle expert. Finally opened up a showroom located in New York City, Peter has reached for the stars in everything he's wanted in life. By 2013, Peter was approached by Anthropologie in which he launched a very successful ready-to-wear collection. The initiative made designer clothing available to a wider range of consumers. By 2014, Les Copains Group announced Peter Som as the official designer for the contemporary Blue Collection beginning with the Spring/Summer 2015 collection.
