Designer of the week is Agnes Trouble also known as Agnes B. Graduated from Ecole du Louvre in Paris, her career soon came afterwards when her personal style caught the eye of Elle Magazine. Her style at the time was inspired less by fashion than thrift which got her the position of junior editor for the magazine. However, she did not stay there long. She preferred apprenticeships even though they didn't pay well. To her, it wasn't about the money, it was about improving her skill. She soon became a designer as well as a buyer. To build her reputation, she did a lot of freelance designing till she was able to start her own company called Comptoir Mondial de Creation. Agnes B label was born and her first boutique opened in Les Halles in 1975.
Agnes started creating menswear by 1981 after observing men appropriate clothes designed for women. By 1983, she opened her first international store on Prince Street in New York's SoHo district. This store featured a lot of vintage and oversized posters due to her love of the American crime film genre, dubbed film noir in France. On top of fashion, you may also find her skincare, perfume and cosmetics line along with maternity wear, shoes, and of course bags. Since the growth of her brand, she has been successful in opening multiple stores throughout the world. Chic, everyday designs, from long striped tees, signature snap cardigans and streamlined suits have remained untouched. She now dabbles in film directing which film has always been an interest to her.
Trends still remain snubbed by Agnes but many can agree that her designs remain timeless. She respects clothes and the materials but she also loves people and that's why her designs continue to evolve. To create that perfect piece for the everyday customer. However, she often has spoken about not liking Fashion itself. The fashion bubble that we all put ourselves in. You can be a fashion designer and not love fashion. Fashion has been broken up into many pieces. Styling, self branding, your image of how you want the world to see you and so on. Agnes just love clothes, the materials, that's it. Nothing in between. Like a singer who runs away from their celebrity title. Loves to sing but doesn't like the celebrity title. Strives for a more private life which is understandable. Let your art do the talking.
