Designer of the week is Phoebe Philo. Born in Paris but true to Britain. At the age of 14, Philo started customizing her own clothes after receiving a sewing machine from her parents for her birthday. She would even try to customize a school leotard to mimic one worn by her favorite artist, Madonna. She too studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London like some of our fellow designers. Showing her final student collection as part of her final to The Guardian was probably what set her career in motion from that day going forward. Right out of school, Philo didn't procrastinate, she quickly joined the brand Chloe as Stella McCartney's first assistant for ready to wear collection in Paris. She finally became the creative director in 2001 which was the challenge she exactly needed.
By 2006, she left the company to have her second child. This was the perfect time for her to focus on her family and to figure out her own style. Around 2008, LVMH offered her the position of creative director and board member of the French Maison Celine. Her designs while being under Celine has been nothing but effortless and perfect for the runway. However, she did leave the company in 2017 which many people found odd and did not like. I for one hopes that she comes back. The playfulness in her designs with a hint of sexy while still being strong is just amazing. I'm sure this decision was just so that she could refocus on her family which I hope she takes her time but when she get's that itch that all designers get. I hope she comes back to share with the world!
