Designer of the week is Jason Wu. Known for being a leading global designer that is based in New York, NY. Merging classic American sportswear elements with a refined couture sensibility. Another Parsons student, Wu trained under Narciso Rodriguez before launching his own collection. Wu actually learned how to sew from designing and sewing for dolls thanks to his mom for buying his first sewing machine. On top of learning how to sew, he went to Tokyo to study sculpturing. If you pay attention to his collections, you can see the artistic flair. To get his foot in the door, he started making doll clothing for the toy company Integrity Toys under the line Jason Wu dolls and later to Fashion Royalty. After graduating from Loomis Chaffee School in 2001, Wu made the finally decision to become a fashion designer and that's when he joined Parsons. Not to promote this but he didn't graduate. Keep in mind that very rare amount of students that don't graduate actually become successful. However, very few become successful even if they graduate but the numbers are higher. That's a discussion for another day, but Wu hit the ground running.
He already had a small platform from creating doll clothing. The money he gained from that was what he used to start his first collection in 2003. With consistent hard work, he successful made his name known. Literally throwing every creative curve he could, the fashion industry took notes. This fresh new designer won the Fashion Group Internationals Rising Star award in 2008 followed by the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award along with many other awards. You can see his work be photographed underwater by Howard Schatz for Delta Faucet Company's campaign in 2006. Wu is also known for dressing Michelle Obama multiple times along with Amber Valletta, Ivana Trump, Reese Witherspoon, Christy Turlington, and along working with RuPaul. The year 2011 started the expansion where Wu went from not just doing women's apparel but fragrance and accessories. To complete the perfect path to his goal, Wu was named as the art director of German fashion house Hugo Boss overseeing the entire womenswear range in 2013. The fashion industry knows that he is the next designer to watch with his innovative and creative ideas. I'm sure the upcoming years will change how we few fashion.
