Designer of the week is Stefano Pilati. Born in Milan, which as we all know has became popular by the 1980s for fashion. Since the up rise of Milan, Pilati gave up his course in environmental design to join the fashion house Cerruti as an intern. Embracing Milan's fashion scene, Pilati set out to learn everything there was to know about ready-to-wear apparel materials and production. His first official job was at an Italian velvet manufacturer that he later started designing the companies entire collection and presenting it to Europe's leading ready-to-wear names. Later, he joined Giorgio Armani as an assistant in their men's ready-to-wear department in 1993. By 1995, he soon joined Prada to run their fabric research and development which lead him to being Miu Miu assistant designer. It wasn't till becoming head designer of Yves Saint Laurent by 2000 Pilate really started to plan for the future. Couldn't miss an opportunity to join Tom Ford in the role of Creative Director in 2004 when Ford left the company. By 2012, he left YSL to be head of design at Ermenegildo Zegna. It wasn't till 2017 that Pilati started Random Identities.
He uploaded 17 looks to Instagram which many say this was the official birth of his brand. Pilati has an unerring ability to design ahead of the curve. He is known for keeping a low profile but no one knows what he will end up doing next since as you can see his track record of jumping for brand to brand. Absolutely not a bad idea since he has been able to learn different styles and techniques. Not to mention the network that he has established is only beneficial to his name brand. Making this drastic change helped Pilati find himself again. Pilati's life was intensely defined by fashion but he couldn't recognize himself anymore. Pilati loves the feeling of being free and making his own decisions. Some of the reasons on why many think he bounced around is because his creativity was limited to the brands vision.
Starting his own company has allowed him to make his own rules. To go at his own speed and to make things the way he wants. Which if you get a chance to see his collections in person, you will understand why he made the choices that he made. Unfiltered and bare. Identify yourself not with the trends, but with personality, function, bringing confidence, genderless, quality, and of course design. However, our system has changed how many see fashion. It's no longer the history, personal style and or experience. It's almost as if designers have become entertainers. Pilati states that chic can only be suggested but not sold. You can't sell chic! So he continues to be a leader, role model for the next generations to come.
