Ralph Lauren

Designer of the week is Ralph Lauren. Ralph Lauren is an American fashion designer and is best known for his multi-billion dollar enterprise. His original name is Ralph Lifshitz. At the age of 16, he changed his last name to Lauren because kids kept making fun of his last name having "shit" in it. The name Lauren has no connection to anyone. It's a nice last name and that's what he wanted. Having experience from selling ties to his fellow students, after he served in the United States Army, he got on to work for Brooks Brothers as a sales assistant. In 1966, he became inspired to design a wide European style necktie but the company rejected him. Which caused him to leave and start up his own company. Safe to say that Brooks Brothers company made a bad decision in letting Lauren go.
Lauren went on to open his own necktie store under the label "Polo" which actually came from Brooks Brothers. Brook Brothers got to keep their trademark "original polo button down collar" but that didn't stop Lauren. In 1970, Ralph Lauren was noticed for his menswear as well as his tailored women's suits. His first Ralph Lauren collection was released in 1972 for women. His collection gained recognition and since then, you can see his collection featured in movies. In 1997, Ralph Lauren Corporation had become a public company. Lauren isn't just known for his apparel, he is also known for his homeware, accessories and fragrances. He has over 300 stores worldwide and continues to grow.
