Valentino Garavani

Designer of the week is the lovely Valentino Garavani. This well known Italian designer became interested in fashion when he apprenticed under his aunt Roas. He then moved to Paris to continue apprenticeship with Jasques Fath, Balenciaga and Jean Desses. In 1960, he left Paris and opened his fashion house in Rome. Over the years Valentino became known for his red dresses, a.k.a "Valentino red." In 1962, Valentino had his first show at Pitti Palace where it was seen as true revelation.
Made such an impression on Jacqueline Kennedy. She ordered six haute couture dresses from Valentino in which she wore  during her year of mourning President John F. Kennedy's assassination. She is a devoted client now. Valentino's main lines are Valentino, Valentino Garavani, Valentino Roma and RED Valentino. His documentary, Valentino: The Last Emperor, is a must see movie. Many people can write about a designer but to see a documentary where they are interacting with the cameras would be considered a once in a life time experience for us who don't get a chance to meet him. To see how his mind works, how he talks to people and the creativity come alive.
Then and now photo. Him and his business partner, Giancarlo Giammetti.
